What Is Ventavis Used For?

Ventavis (iloprost) is a prostacyclin mimetic that works by relaxing and widening blood vessels in the lungs. It is indicated for the treatment of:

  • Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), WHO Group 1, to improve exercise tolerance, symptoms, and slow disease progression

Ventavis is a prescription medicine and must be used under the supervision of a qualified pulmonologist or cardiologist, administered via a compatible nebulizer device.

Recommended Dosage

  • Initial inhaled dose of 2.5 mcg as delivered at the mouthpiece
  • If well tolerated, increased to 5.0 mcg and maintained at that dose; otherwise maintained at 2.5 mcg
  • Taken 6 to 9 times per day during waking hours, no more than once every 2 hours

This information is not a treatment plan. For personalized medical advice, consult your doctor and refer to the full prescribing information.

Ventavis Warnings and Precautions

  • Syncope: Ventavis can cause syncope (fainting), and dose adjustments should be made carefully; syncope may also occur when a scheduled dose is missed.
  • Pulmonary edema: In patients with pulmonary venous hypertension, Ventavis may cause pulmonary edema.
  • Bleeding risk: As a platelet aggregation inhibitor, Ventavis may increase the risk of bleeding, especially in patients on anticoagulants.
  • Hypotension: Ventavis can lower blood pressure; caution is advised in patients with low baseline blood pressure or when combined with other blood pressure-lowering agents.
  • Bronchospasm: May occur, particularly in patients with reactive airway disease.

Documentation & Availability

What documents are required to import Ventavis to India?

Ventavis (iloprost) inhalation solution may be imported in the patient's name only, by patients or government hospitals, in line with India's import regulations for unapproved medicines. The following documentation is required:

  • A valid prescription from a qualified pulmonologist or cardiologist
  • The patient's diagnostic reports confirming pulmonary arterial hypertension (WHO Group 1)
  • Patient ID proof (issued by the Government of India)

How is the order confirmed?

The order is confirmed only after receipt and verification of a valid prescription from the doctor and, if applicable, an import permit.

Is Ventavis available in India?

Ventavis (iloprost inhalation solution) is a prescription medicine that legally requires a doctor's prescription to be dispensed. As of current publicly available information, Ventavis is not commercially marketed in India.

However, patients in India can legally access Ventavis through the Named Patient Program (NPP) — an import provision that allows patients to receive medicines approved in other countries but not yet marketed in India, under a doctor's prescription and proper regulatory documentation.

Ventavis received US FDA approval in 2004 for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, ensuring full transparency throughout the process.

Ventavis can be made available to patients, doctors, and hospitals across major cities in India, including Gurgaon, Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Hyderabad, Mysore, Kerala, Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, Jaipur, Udaipur, Lucknow, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Chandigarh, Mohali, Faridabad, Noida, Ghaziabad, Kochi, Trivandrum, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Kannur, Mangalore, Bhubaneswar, Patna, Ranchi, Raipur, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Goa, Jammu, Srinagar, Dehradun, Bhopal, Indore, Ludhiana, Amritsar, and others.
