What Is Erivedge Used For?

Erivedge (vismodegib) is the first FDA-approved agent that targets the Hedgehog signaling pathway, which drives many basal cell carcinomas. It is indicated for the treatment of:

  • Adults with metastatic basal cell carcinoma (BCC)
  • Adults with locally advanced BCC that has recurred after surgery, or who are not candidates for surgery or radiation

Erivedge is a prescription medicine and must be used under the supervision of a qualified oncologist or dermatologist.

Recommended Dosage

  • 150 mg taken orally once daily, until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity

This information is not a treatment plan. For personalized medical advice, consult your doctor and refer to the full prescribing information.

Boxed Warning — Erivedge: Erivedge can cause embryo-fetal death or severe birth defects. Pregnancy status must be verified within 7 days before starting treatment. Females of reproductive potential must use effective contraception during treatment and for 24 months after the final dose. Male patients must use condoms, even after vasectomy, during treatment and for 3 months after the final dose, to avoid exposing pregnant or reproductive-age partners.

Erivedge Warnings and Precautions

  • Embryo-fetal toxicity: See boxed warning above.
  • Blood donation: Patients should not donate blood or blood products during treatment and for 24 months after the final dose.
  • Musculoskeletal adverse reactions: Muscle spasms are very common and should be monitored.
  • Premature fusion of the epiphyses: Has been reported in pediatric patients (Erivedge is not approved for pediatric use).

Documentation & Availability

What documents are required to import Erivedge to India?

Erivedge (vismodegib) capsules may be imported in the patient's name only, by patients or government hospitals, in line with India's import regulations for unapproved medicines. The following documentation is required:

  • A valid prescription from a qualified oncologist or dermatologist
  • The patient's diagnostic reports confirming basal cell carcinoma
  • Patient ID proof (issued by the Government of India)

How is the order confirmed?

The order is confirmed only after receipt and verification of a valid prescription from the doctor and, if applicable, an import permit.

Is Erivedge available in India?

Erivedge (vismodegib capsules) is a prescription medicine that legally requires a doctor's prescription to be dispensed. As of current publicly available information, Erivedge is not commercially marketed in India.

However, patients in India can legally access Erivedge through the Named Patient Program (NPP) — an import provision that allows patients to receive medicines approved in other countries but not yet marketed in India, under a doctor's prescription and proper regulatory documentation.

Erivedge received US FDA approval in January 2012 for advanced basal cell carcinoma, ensuring full transparency throughout the process.

Erivedge can be made available to patients, doctors, and hospitals across major cities in India, including Gurgaon, Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Hyderabad, Mysore, Kerala, Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, Jaipur, Udaipur, Lucknow, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Chandigarh, Mohali, Faridabad, Noida, Ghaziabad, Kochi, Trivandrum, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Kannur, Mangalore, Bhubaneswar, Patna, Ranchi, Raipur, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Goa, Jammu, Srinagar, Dehradun, Bhopal, Indore, Ludhiana, Amritsar, and others.
