Fruzaqla (fruquintinib) is a selective inhibitor of all three VEGF receptor kinases (VEGFR-1, -2, and -3), developed by HUTCHMED and marketed by Takeda. Fruzaqla is the brand name used in the US and EU; the same active ingredient is marketed in China as Elunate.
Fruzaqla is approved for adult patients with previously treated metastatic colorectal cancer, regardless of biomarker status, who have received prior fluoropyrimidine-, oxaliplatin-, and irinotecan-based chemotherapy, an anti-VEGF therapy, and (if RAS wild-type and medically appropriate) an anti-EGFR therapy. It was the first novel chemotherapy-free treatment approved for this patient population in the US in more than a decade.
By selectively inhibiting all three VEGF receptor kinases, fruquintinib blocks angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation) that tumors rely on for growth and spread.
The recommended dose is 5 mg orally once daily for the first 21 days of each 28-day cycle, taken with or without food at approximately the same time each day, until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity, as determined by the treating oncologist.
Fruzaqla requires monitoring for several adverse effects common to VEGF-pathway inhibitors.
