What Is Epidiolex Used For?

Epidiolex (cannabidiol) is a purified, plant-derived cannabinoid oral solution with anticonvulsant activity. It is indicated for the treatment of seizures associated with:

  • Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS)
  • Dravet syndrome (DS)
  • Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC)

Epidiolex is approved for patients 1 year of age and older and is a prescription medicine that must be used under the supervision of a qualified neurologist, with baseline and periodic liver function monitoring.

Recommended Dosage

  • Starting dose: 2.5 mg/kg by mouth twice daily (5 mg/kg/day)
  • Increased in weekly increments of 2.5 mg/kg twice daily, as tolerated
  • Recommended maintenance dose: 12.5 mg/kg twice daily (25 mg/kg/day)

This information is not a treatment plan. For personalized medical advice, consult your doctor and refer to the full prescribing information.

Epidiolex Warnings and Precautions

  • Liver injury: Epidiolex can cause dose-related elevations of liver transaminases (ALT and/or AST). Serum transaminases and total bilirubin should be checked before starting treatment and monitored periodically thereafter.
  • Somnolence and sedation: Patients should be monitored for sedation, and advised not to drive or operate machinery until they know how Epidiolex affects them, especially when used with other CNS depressants.
  • Suicidal thoughts and behavior: As with other anti-seizure medicines, patients should be monitored for new or worsening depression, suicidal thoughts, or unusual mood changes.
  • Withdrawal of use: Epidiolex should not be discontinued abruptly, due to the risk of increased seizure frequency and status epilepticus; the dose should be tapered gradually.

Documentation & Availability

What documents are required to import Epidiolex to India?

Epidiolex (cannabidiol) oral solution may be imported in the patient's name only, by patients or government hospitals, in line with India's import regulations for unapproved medicines. The following documentation is required:

  • A valid prescription from a qualified neurologist
  • The patient's diagnostic reports, including confirmation of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, Dravet syndrome, or tuberous sclerosis complex
  • Patient ID proof (issued by the Government of India)

How is the order confirmed?

The order is confirmed only after receipt and verification of a valid prescription from the doctor and, if applicable, an import permit.

Is Epidiolex available in India?

Epidiolex (cannabidiol oral solution) is a prescription medicine that legally requires a doctor's prescription to be dispensed. As of current publicly available information, Epidiolex is not commercially marketed in India.

However, patients in India can legally access Epidiolex through the Named Patient Program (NPP) — an import provision that allows patients to receive medicines approved in other countries but not yet marketed in India, under a doctor's prescription and proper regulatory documentation.

Epidiolex received US FDA approval in 2018 for seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, Dravet syndrome, and tuberous sclerosis complex, ensuring full transparency throughout the process.

Epidiolex can be made available to patients, doctors, and hospitals across major cities in India, including Gurgaon, Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Hyderabad, Mysore, Kerala, Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, Jaipur, Udaipur, Lucknow, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Chandigarh, Mohali, Faridabad, Noida, Ghaziabad, Kochi, Trivandrum, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Kannur, Mangalore, Bhubaneswar, Patna, Ranchi, Raipur, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Goa, Jammu, Srinagar, Dehradun, Bhopal, Indore, Ludhiana, Amritsar, and others.

For patients with Dravet syndrome, NPP also facilitates access to Diacomit, another anti-seizure therapy sometimes used alongside Epidiolex, based on the treating neurologist's assessment.
