What Is Normosang Used For?

Normosang (human hemin, as heme arginate) replenishes heme and suppresses the overproduction of porphyrin precursors that drive acute porphyria attacks. It is indicated for the treatment of:

  • Acute attacks of hepatic porphyria, including acute intermittent porphyria, porphyria variegata, and hereditary coproporphyria

Normosang is approved in Europe; it is a different formulation from the US-approved hemin product (Panhematin) and is not itself FDA-approved. It is a prescription medicine and must be administered under the supervision of a qualified specialist experienced in treating acute porphyria.

Recommended Dosage

  • 3 mg/kg body weight, up to a maximum of 250 mg (one ampoule) per day
  • Given once daily for 4 consecutive days, diluted and infused intravenously over at least 30 minutes into a large vein using an in-line filter

This information is not a treatment plan. For personalized medical advice, consult your doctor and refer to the full prescribing information.

Normosang Warnings and Precautions

  • Infusion site reactions: Phlebitis and thrombosis can occur at the infusion site; administration into a large vein using an in-line filter is recommended.
  • Iron overload: Repeated dosing can contribute to iron overload; iron status should be monitored with frequent or prolonged use.
  • Anticoagulant effect: Normosang has a mild anticoagulant effect and should be used cautiously in patients with bleeding disorders or on anticoagulant therapy.
  • Not interchangeable with Panhematin: Normosang and the US-approved hemin product are different formulations and are not considered pharmaceutically equivalent.

Documentation & Availability

What documents are required to import Normosang to India?

Normosang (human hemin) injection may be imported in the patient's name only, by patients or government hospitals, in line with India's import regulations for unapproved medicines. The following documentation is required:

  • A valid prescription from a qualified specialist experienced in treating acute porphyria
  • The patient's diagnostic reports confirming acute hepatic porphyria
  • Patient ID proof (issued by the Government of India)

How is the order confirmed?

The order is confirmed only after receipt and verification of a valid prescription from the doctor and, if applicable, an import permit.

Is Normosang available in India?

Normosang (human hemin injection) is a prescription medicine that legally requires a doctor's prescription to be dispensed. As of current publicly available information, Normosang is not commercially marketed in India.

However, patients in India can legally access Normosang through the Named Patient Program (NPP) — an import provision that allows patients to receive medicines approved in other countries but not yet marketed in India, under a doctor's prescription and proper regulatory documentation.
